Carmen gives us the lowdown on Yoga Nidra

Q: What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep as it is commonly known, its an ancient practice a state between sleeping and waking. It is an immensely powerful meditation technique, and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. While the student rests comfortably in savasana (corpse pose), this systematic meditation takes you through the pancha maya kosha (five layers of self), leaving you with a sense of wholeness. It incorporates meditation on the breath, the balancing of emotional states, visualisation, and self-healing. Setting a positive intention is another important step (which is called a sankalpa) and this gives the student a specific purpose to the session. The body’s systems are able to rest deeply while accessing the subconscious.

The benefits of Yoga nidra is that any one can practice, any at any stage of life, it helps the physical and metal bodies rest, helps promotes deep rest and relaxation that isn’t found in your average meditation practice. Although it does not replace normal sleep, 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is the equivalent of 3 to 4 hours of unconscious sleep. Yoga nidra is very beneficial because it removes fatigue and invigorates the body, many of us live very busy life’s and often are overstimulated so Nidra is a perfect practice to rest and heal. The stages of body scan and breath awareness alone can be practiced to calm the nervous system, leading to less stress and better health. It’s a powerful form of manifestation when used with Sankalpa with a regular practice

Q: Why did you train as a Yoga Nidra Teacher:

I have been a practitioner of Nidra for many years and having experienced the transformative healing power of Nidra in my own life through a regular practice I began my studies to become a certified Yoga Nidra teacher. Its a great healing tool and as a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist to share this practice with my clients and students gives me great joy to see them deeply relax, let go and heal. I often record my clients a Yoga Nidra practice that is personal for them to take home to practice.
